Predators

How is the green mirid bug important?
Identify and describe the importance of the green mirid bug, Cyrtorhinus lividipennis in the rice field.

An important predator of hopper eggs

The green mirid bug Cyrtorhinus lividipennis Reuter is a member of the family Miridae. Both the nymph and adult stages are important predators of hopper eggs. They may also attack hopper nymphs and adults.

This abundant and active predator is commonly found on rice leaves and stems.

Method of egg destruction
Cyrtorhinus sucks out the liquid contents of hopper eggs, which causes the eggs to collapse.

Results in insectary cages
In insectary cages, the presence of Cyrtorhinus among brown planthoppers significantly reduces the pest's density. Click here to display a chart that highlights IRRI research regarding Cyrtorhinus among brown planthoppers.

Next lesson
In the next lesson, we will learn about the broad-shouldered water strider, Microvelia douglasi atrolineata.
