Module II:

Planting the rice

This module talks about the different ways to plant rice and what you should do to get a high rate of plant establishment.

Plant establishment is affected by 3 factors:

  1. quality of seed,

  2. environment in which seed is placed, and

  3. the system of seeding used.

The most suitable planting technique (seeding) depends on locality, soil type, crop ecosystem and availability of inputs and labor. The rice crop is either direct seeded or transplanted.

Direct seeding (left) and transplanting (right)

The number of plants established and seedling vigor will affect competitiveness of the crop against weeds, and ultimately determine final yield potential.
