Describe the different storage systems.

 Store rice un-milled!

Rice storage facilities

Rice storage facilities can take many forms. The form of storage depends on:

  1. how much you need to store,

  2. the purpose of storage (grain or seed?)

  3. where the storage is (e.g. climate)

In what form should you store rice?

In general, it is recommended that rice for food purposes is stored in paddy form rather than milled rice. Storing as paddy is safer because the husk provides some protection against insects and helps to prevent quality deterioration. However, if rice is stored as brown rice instead of paddy, 20% less storage capacity will be needed.

A  storage system is good when it is:

  • free from moisture re-entering the grain after drying

  • protected from insects, rodents and birds

  • easy to load or unload grain

  • efficient in terms of space

  • easy to maintain and manage.

"Bulk" means in big volume

Remember to only store your grain if you meet the following conditions:

You can safely store grain for a longer period if 3 conditions are met:

Now that you can describe different storage systems, let’s learn a bit more on hermetic storage or sealed storage.
