Welcome to IRRI’s

Rice Breeding Course!

Introduction

Rice breeders are faced with increasing pressure to produce varieties that are adopted by farmers, but funds for agricultural research are declining in many countries. Breeders must therefore maximize impact with limited resources. IRRI is offering a new course to help breeders redesign their programs for increased efficiency and effectiveness.

The course will use selection theory to help breeders assess the usefulness of new tools including:

  • Marker-aided selection

  • Participatory methods

  • Statistical methods to analyze data from multi-location yield trials

  • New experimental designs for the control of field variability

Who is this course for?

This course is targeted at breeders and agronomists working in variety development or cultivar testing, and at research managers with responsibility for rice breeding programs. The course will be most useful to breeders working in

rainfed environments.

The main goals of this course are:

  1. To give breeders planning tools, based on selection theory, permitting them to make the best use of limited research resources

  2. To help breeders understand the strengths, weaknesses, and applications of new techniques, and to decide if they should be applied in their own programs

  3. To give breeders an opportunity to assess, and redesign their own programs for greater impact
